Twilight, Skyfall remain top picks for movie fans

Skyfall and Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 2 are the top movies being spoken about from Hollywood right now.

You maybe be wondering why I decided to specify Hollywood. Well the reason is because that is not the only film industry out there. In fact its not even the largest film industry. Another movie that is being spoken about is Jab Tak Hai Jaan from the largest film industry in the world, Bollywood. Sorry had to add a little masala (Spice) to this blog.

So back to the topic. Skyfall has raised 246 million dollars domestically in its fourth week and 900 million world wide. While Breaking Dawn has dominated the domestic box office with 254.6 million but slumped with 702 million internationally in it's second week.

I believe the reason for why these two movies are the top grossing movies in theaters right now is because they come from series. This is not the first time a series has dominated box office sales. Another example would be The Dark Knight Rises which completed the batman trilogy, The Avengers which isn't part of a series particularly but is a movie made up of several movies like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America. Other series that have been top in the last two years include Pirates of the Caribbean On Strangers Tides, Transformers 3, Fast 5, Mission Impossible IV, Deathly Hallows Part II and the list goes on.

Do you agree? What other advantages help a movie to be successful?

  1. I tend to disagree sir. Sure if a movie is a squeal people will go crazy but that is only because the first one was actually good. Look at Avatar puth, it is the number 1 film ever broken numerous records because it was that great and the marketing was even better. They hyped people for that ish like there no tommorow, and now because the first one was amazing people are amped for the next one Avatar 2. Also movies that are based on true events were also successful not because they are forming a movie sequel or a part of one its because of marketing is being done linking to the true stories (that is if its an interesting story) Another thing with the hangover series, the first one was hilarious and very well done and then hang over 2 came out and didn't get the best reviews compared to the first one. Now a third one is coming out, so some times the first one is always the best and cannot be replicated. The thing with Harry Potter and Twilight is that they are very published books and have a lot of exposure already so its inevitable that the movies will too. That and because there's a lot of stupid teenage girls that like that actually enjoy that teenage vampire crap..

  2. Amrit WOULD add bollywood stuff on his blog :P Making me proud still :')

Anyways...I completely agree with Ankush about how " The thing with Harry Potter and Twilight is that they are very published books and have a lot of exposure already so its inevitable that the movies will too"...Getting exposure is really critical in the entertainment industry because everything is dependent on people and how well you market yourself/object. Before the Twilight movies were released, there was a HUGE HYPE about the twilight books..Even my sister used to love that series and read all of the books and hence I came to know about it. Every teenage girl wanted a vampire or werewolf boy friend( crazy girls!). Due to the big hype of the books, the movies got a lot of exposure and were able to attract customers, esp. teenage girls.

And about skyfall, obvii. it;s good...C'mon now, it's JAMES BOND that we are talking about here..I personally didn't get time to see the movie yet but I hope to watch it soontimes..Maybe I will just wait till it comes out on wwww.thepiratebay.se and download it #BROKELIFE #brownman

  3. Hahaha...you guys are hilarious. As your Catholic school teacher DPac I should point out that that pirating is unethical and a form of "stealing." Perhaps consider renting it or going to watch it on TUESDAYS!

Definitely a little "masala" on this blog Amrit. Way to remind people that Hollywood ain't the be all and end all of the movie industry.

I agree and disagree with some of all three of your points. Big factor you guys mentioned was the fact that they are published novel series...they already have a following - a following who anxiously ANTICIPATE a movie(s). Ankush's final point/sentence, though very blunt, is both hilarious and may hold some merit.

One thing I do agree is that many times, sequels are not better than the first, but I think the distinction needs be made between sequels, trilogies, etc. and SERIES WITH FOLLOWERS (which often have a continuous story). There is a also a lack of great movies these days and thus blockbusters and well-known adaptations, as well as strong marketing campaigns (as you guys mentioned) have been making these movies a success.

    Good comments guys,

    p.s. Skyfall was JUST okay
p.p.s. I like your blog's design (background, template, etc) Amrit.

    1. I agree completely with why you think movies are a great success. Especially the last sentence because that was what I was implying.

P.S. Thank you sir. It is a sexy design.

  4. I agree that movies with background have more profit, they are more known to the public as opposed to an unknown movie. The overall thing I believe is the main factor to their success is advertisement. Everytime you turn on a tv you see advertisement, that is the true key and is what I believe. Overall I am not a fan of those two never really got into the series and such

  5. I agree that it is the background of the movies that make them successful. I think that the trailers of the movies also make them successful. Movie trailers appear on TV. If the trailer of a movie looks interesting, people will want to watch that movie.

  6. I love twilight, breaking dawn was the last and BEST one of the series. I personally think that you are right to say that this movie was a success because it was a squeal BUT it was also successful because it was just plain good!
